Portable Dog Water Bottles for People and Pets on the Go

Finding the Right Portable Dog Water Bottle Is Not as Easy as It Seems

Although dozens of portable dog water bottles are available through pet product suppliers, finding the right portable dog water dispenser for you and your pet has its challenges.  Brick and mortar pet product stores, large or small, offer only a fraction of the dog water bottle styles available, and thus a shopping trip to your local pet store will show you only a few options. The Internet offers all of the styles available, and although you can find the entire range of portable dog water bottles on the Net, choosing the right search terms to find what you are looking for can be daunting.  While you are “window shopping” the many offerings out there, remember that your dog has specific hydration requirements that need to be met when you are hiking, camping, road tripping, working, exercising, eventing, or just taking an evening’s visit to the local dog park. Just as important, you have specific requirements for the effort you put into managing the equipment that meets your dog’s hydration needs. This guide will help you find the right portable dog water dispenser to meet the needs of both you and your dog.

Things to Think About - How Big and How Active Is Your Dog?

A 90-pound dog has hydration requirements that are different from a 20-pound pooch.  A dog water bottle with a 20-ounce capacity is a better choice for a 90-pound dog than one with a 10-ounce capacity. If your dog is a serious drinker, and you plan to be away from water for an extended period of time, you may want to use more than one dog water bottle. Alternately, you could put extra water in a larger container and refill the dog water bottle when necessary.

Just as humans, some dogs are more active than others. I was always surprised at the amount of water my daughter's 70-pound dog would drink during play compared to what my 80-pound Goldie would drink. She was older and less active. My daughter's pooch would drain his Gulpy in a few sloppy minutes; my girl would take a dainty lick or two and then head off for the nearest shade tree.

Both the size and the activity level of your dog are important considerations in choosing a portable dog water bottle.

Things To Think About - Plastic or Stainless Steel?

In general, stainless steel should have a longer lifespan than plastic. Most stainless steel dog water bottles are equipped with a rolling ball that dispenses water as your dog uses his tongue to rotate the ball. When shopping for a stainless steel dog water bottle, read the manufacturer's description, care instructions, and warranty carefully. As you would expect, stainless steel bottles are pricier than plastic.

Plastic portable dog water bottles are not only more reasonably priced, they are also lighter in weight. If you plan to ask your dog to carry his own water (and possibly additional provisions as well), give some consideration to the amount of weight that will go into his backpack. If you are planning a three-day hike and carrying all your equipment on your back, you know the weight-saving value of something so seemingly insignificant as stripping the cardboard cylinder out of a roll of toilet tissue. Have the same consideration for your dog.

Things to Think About - Quality and Reliable Retailers

As you take a look at the variety of portable dog water bottles on the market, take the time to carefully read not only product specifications and warranty information, but also customer reviews when they are available. Check out the retailer’s rating and return policy, too. And look at pricing differences and weigh them against shipping charges.

The best place to research and find the right portable dog water bottle for you and your pet is online. Check out these offerings.

Plastic Dog Water Bottle Features To Consider

There's a huge variety of plastic portable dog water bottles on the market. Here are some features you will want to consider when making the right choice for you and your dog.

  • Wide mouth for adding ice?
  • Carrying strap or belt clip?
  • Dishwasher safe?
  • Does the bottle rest on the ground or do you have to hold it?
  • Capacity? (Mini bottles hold around 10 ounces, standard-sized bottles up to 22 ounces, and canteen styles up to 36 ounces.)
  • Can the cap and dish be attached to any standard-sized water bottle?
  • Will the bottle fit in a car's cup holder?
  • Are materials recyclable and non-toxic?

Canteen Style - A Good Choice for Large Dogs

Canteen style portable dog water dispensers generally hold more water than the bottle styles. Capacities range from 26 to 36 ounces.

These are excellent choices for large thirsty dogs and for road trips where neither you nor your pet will be carrying water while walking.

Stainless Steel Dog Water Bottle Features To Consider

  • Carrying strap or belt clip?
  • Roller ball delivery?
  • Wide mouth for adding ice?
  • Constructed with non-toxic and recyclable materials?

Tips for Extending the Life of Your Portable Dog Water Bottle

  • Washing: Care for your dog water bottle as you would care for your own. After each use, wash with mild soap in warm water, rinse thoroughly, and let air dry. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning.
  • Water temperature while filling: All dog water bottles are designed for room-temperature or cold water filling. Do not be tempted to fill a bottle with boiling water so that it can cool off rather than freeze during a winter hike. Boiling water degrades plastic, possibly releasing toxins, and may damage the seams of a steel bottle.
  • Dropping the water bottle: Treat your dog water bottle with caution, as you would the other possessions in your life. A stainless steel bottle can be dented and its seals displaced by dropping on a hard surface. Likewise, a plastic bottle may suffer fracture of one or more of its parts. No manufacturer will guarantee its product against irresponsible use.
  • Placing the filled portable dog water bottle in the freezer: You may be tempted to do this, as you prepare for a hot summer hike in the mountains or a day on the beach. You may think that by the time the heat of the day thaws the water in the bottle, your dog will have a cool drink. Don’t do it. Water expands when it freezes and puts pressure on its container. Long before your dog can have that refreshing drink, the dog water bottle may be ruined by the expanding water damaging the mechanical parts of your dog water bottle.

We’ve Come a Long Way, Baby!

Gone are the days of pouring a canteen of water into a Stetson to give a faithful animal companion a refreshing drink after a long hot ride out on the range. Today we have many excellent products to choose from. Use the information in this guide to enjoy your shopping, taking plenty of time to plan for your needs as well as your pet’s.

Is Your Dog Afraid of the Portable Dog Water Bottle?

Not all dogs take readily to drinking from an unfamiliar source. If your dog is reluctant to give this water source a try, there are positive training techniques you can use to help him along. See what Whitney05 has to say about encouraging your dog to drink from a portable dog water bottle.

Thanks for the good words, Aiden! Now I'm off to start reading your dog training Hubs. You have a new fan.

Let me get this straight, I am supposed to buy a dog a $20.00 stainless steel water bottle and I am still cupping my hand under the water faucet to get a drink. What is this world coming to?

You, my friend come up with the most interesting hubs. I love to see our troops having some fun.

Neil, one of the things I love about you is that not much gets past you! You did get it straight.

Now, when I write a Hub about shopping for portable human water bottles, I'm going to expect you to buy one of those and stop drinking out of your hand.

As always, my friend, I just adore your comments. ~Sherri

Habee, I think your Danes need a 10-gallon cowboy hat and one of those over-sized Micky Dee insulated water coolers. You do have a truck where the gate opens in the back, right? :)

Cool hub - and so important. I find the ones that hook on your belt really sturdily work best but of course we are usually flying along on a scooter or bike (or sled) and or being dragged at the speed of light by our malamutes! Funny thing for ours though is that they very seldom want to drink water and we have to rest them for quite a while before they will decide they want it! Whereas my mom's lab drinks it constantly....too funny. Again, great info and SO essential for dogs' welfare!

Sally the title alone caught my attention, but the hub held it from beginning to end. :) Never knew there was so much to know about doggie water bottles. Great info and very useful hub!

HH and FP, thank you so much for reading and commenting. I always look forward to reading your words.

akirchner, I've found that the belt clip versions don't work very well for me, unless I clip them to the absolute back of my waist. It might have something to do with my natural "sashay". LOL. Inevitably, the clipped-on bottle, when placed around my hip, manages to turn itself at least 90 degrees and then eventually fall off my belt.

I am intrigued about your malamutes not being very interested in water when they are working hard, as opposed to your mom's lab. There's still research to be done about dogs' hydration needs. The best way to guage those needs is in the intimate relationship between dog and human. Clearly, you have learned what your dogs need and want.

Thanks so much for your astute comments which lend so much to this Hub.

Jen, I'm so glad you enjoyed reading this, that these words kept your attention from beginning to end. I'd already had a good deal of experience with portable dog water bottles, using them and selling them, but it wasn't until I started to write this Hub that I paid very close attention to sellers' claims and prices and to the depth of features available. I think there's more to be said on this topic, but I'm going to give my head a rest for now. :)

You can buy portable canvas dog bowls also. They are great with a dog backpack. You can make your dog carry your water and portable canvas bowl in their backpack. I know ebay and http://www.snoopyspets.com has them also. Thanks for the good hub!!!!!

This is great! I had no idea they came in stainless steel. Now I want my own brick-and-mortar that actually stocks a decent selection of choices!

Love you, love your hubs.

Annemaeve, do you think we could make a B&M business out of selling portable dog water bottles? Wouldn't that be quite a boutique business? Maybe enhanced with upscale coffee drinks. And tomato and cantelope treats for doggies. Let's give some thought to that. :)

Who woulda thunk it? I too, never realized all the things you have to take into consideration when shopping for a portable dog water bottle. Personally, as you know, I've never had the need for one with my dogs since they never went any further than town with me. Not to mention, they had my old creek to drink from if they wanted. However, I couldn't stop them from drinking from the pool! Apparently they never drank enough of that to make them sick, thank goodness.

As always, dear friend, your research is second to none :)

Thanks for the good words, my friend! It really is amazing that buying a portable pet water bottle can be as complicated as shopping for an electric coffee pot. So many styles, colors, capacities, and features! Next thing you know, they'll be putting chips in the bottles to monitor and display data such as water temperature, freshness, and maybe even to tell you what time it is. LOL

loriamoore 21 months ago

I had never thought about this because I don't have dogs, but they do need to stay hydrated, don't they?

They sure do, loriamoore. Just like we do. Thanks for reading and commenting!

Right you are, Mulberry. Just like we take a bottle of water along for ourselves, the dogs need it too. I'm glad there are products out there that make it easy to do.

Amazing work, here. It's a little surprising to find out how picky some animals are as to how they eat and drink. My little baby waits until I back up about 2 - 3 feet. He needs his space. He likes to nibble from my hand and eat like he's starving from his bowl...as he looks around to make sure no one is observing too closely. He embarasses easily.

Very good tips here...My pooch seems to prefer water poured up in a bowl. Cool, if possible. Ice, anyone?

Sally's Trove profile image

Sally's Trove Hub Author 20 months ago

Right you are about how picky some can be (just like people!). Where Avi guzzles water from any container, bowl or bottle, and loves ice, Cin was a reluctant Gulpy drinker and had no use for ice. Now, let's not talk about our kids!

marisuewrites profile image

marisuewrites 20 months ago

I hear ya, my kids will eat anything on a plate, and unfortunately, our 4th child...(the "dog"...shhhh we haven't told him yet) will eat everything that's not good for him -- especiallly if he thinks the cat is eyeing it. LOL

I love these characters. So entertaining.

I'll have to tell my sister about this one...she walks her dog daily. :) Thanks for sharing it with us.

My Mother's Pomeranian (now ours since she died earlier this year) won't even drink from those low water fountains in dog parks. Of course he is not there very long and actually he does not know that he is a dog. Shhh! I won't tell him if you won't. Haha! Useful hub for those dogs that will drink out of portable water bottles!

Sally's Trove profile image

Sally's Trove Hub Author 18 months ago

LOL, Peggy. My Goldie never really took to a Gulpy, although she'd give a lick now and again. And she'd have nothing to do with sticking her head in a water bucket at the barn. Maybe your Pom and my girl were related!

Suki C profile image

Suki C Level 2 Commenter 6 months ago

I live in Spain where there's a huge need for a good way to carry water when out with my dogs and I never knew that products such as the Gulpy even existed!

I will check out some of these products (via your Hub of course!) and choose the best one for our needs - thank you :)

Sally's Trove profile image

Sally's Trove Hub Author 6 months ago

Suki, the Gulpy happens to be my favorite. They are well-made and last a very long time (my daughter had to replace hers after four years, when the dish part cracked after being dropped onto concrete). Another nice feature is that the dish part will screw onto any standard-sized personal plastic water bottle.

I didn't know about these products until about 5 years ago when my daughter bought one at a horse show. It was a horribly hot day, her dog was dragging, and she stumbled upon a pet supply booth selling the Gulpy...$10 US, which included a first free fill-up.

As I mentioned in the hub, not all dogs take to this kind of portable dog water bottle. My daughter's dog didn't have any hesitation at all, but my dog did, and it took a while for her to get used to it. (No, Cinnamon, that's not poison, it's water!)

If these products are scarce in Spain, you might have a new business adventure ahead of you. :)
